FLEMINGTON - Stretching a household budget often comes down to choosing a few things that accomplish multiple goals at once. A membership at the Deer Path YMCA, 144 West Woodschurch Road in Flemington, is built that way. Between October 15 and October 31, new members pay a $0 join fee, and members receive lower program rates, with classes open now for a November 1 start. That means a fitness center, a pool, a gym, and a full calendar of family programs can all be part of one monthly plan.
The Deer Path branch includes a six-lane, 25-meter pool that ranges from 3.5 to 12 feet deep, a whirlpool, saunas in the locker rooms, a fitness center with free weights and cardio equipment, a healthy living studio, and a gymnasium. Group exercise classes run daily and are free to members without limit. That variety matters, because a routine you enjoy is a routine you keep. Regular physical activity has been linked to meaningful improvements in mood and anxiety among healthy adults, so a class on a hard day is an investment in everything that comes after it. Even starting with two or three sessions a week moves you toward a weekly target of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity.
"We know rising costs are putting a lot of pressure on people right now, especially families, so we want to do all we can to make sure everyone knows the Y is here for you," said Trish Feinthel, chief operations officer for River Crossing YMCA. "Self-care, affordable youth sports and senior connections are just as important, if not more important than they ever have been, so we want to bring as many people into that fold as possible."
Parents get a break built in. Members can use drop-in Stay & Play babysitting for up to two hours a day while they work out, swim, or take a class. Kids and teens can join the swim team, Junior Sixers basketball, karate and martial arts, ballet and tap, or Obstacle Ninja, and Parent's Night Out evenings for ages 3 months to 12 are scheduled for December 11, January 8, and February 12. Research shows that active kids tend to have healthier hearts, stronger bones and better mental health . Special needs and adaptive programs are part of the picture, too.
The membership travels well, with access to every River Crossing YMCA branch, free InBody body composition scans every 90 days, and an app for classes and tracking. Older adults can join free Hunterdon Senior Connect events at the branch. To take advantage of the $0 join fee, sign up online or visit the branch before October 31. Pick one class, one swim and one family activity for next week, and let the habit build from there. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
