100 Member Choir Sings Brahms at First Presbyterian Church

An exciting concert featuring the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra and 100 voices singing a Johannes Brahms' composition on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 7:30 pm. The performance called, HEAVENLY VOICES, includes the First Presbyterian Church of Englewood Chancel Choir, St. Paul's Episcopal Choir, Newburgh Symphonic Chorale, and Middletown Concert Chorale, with soprano Sandra Ruggles and baritone Ryan Allen.

Well known local choral directors David Macfarlane (First Presbyterian) and Mark Trautman (St. Paul's) will lead their two church choirs; Peter Sipple and Justin Glodich will direct the New York groups. The sounds of four separate choirs singing in harmony will be a marvelous tour de force. 100 voices, a symphony orchestra, soloists, and Brahms are the ingredients for a truly great  concert experience!

The combined choruses add strength and texture to Brahms' deeply stirring "A German Requiem, Opus 45", written between 1865 and 1868 when Brahms was a young man. This piece influenced the entire world of music and confirmed his standing as a composer of international stature. Also on the program is the melancholy "Tragic Overture in D minor, Opus 81"written in 1880, which combines solemn restraint with unleashed power and may rank among Brahms' finest achievements.
