7 Tips for Getting Your Pool Ready - No one actually enjoys opening their pool. It’s time consuming, it’s a hassle, and it can be physically demanding. However, it’s one pool ownership chore you can’t dismiss. It’s necessary to follow all the right steps to properly opening your pool so you can enjoy it all summer long. If you’re like most pool owners, you don’t look forward to opening your pool. And if you take the cover off and see green water, don’t worry. The right mix of chemicals will restore it to its former glory.

Here are seven tips to getting your pool ready this summer:

  • Get all your supplies together. Start off with a checklist and gather all the supplies you will need beforehand, such as telescopic pole, chemicals, skimmers, vacuum hose, test kits, and pool brush.
  • Call a buddy. While you can technically open the pool by yourself, it’s easier if you have two or more people tackling the job. Plus, a friend makes the time go by faster.
  • Stick to one source of information. Instead of gathering information from a bunch of different “experts,” go with one reputable source and stick to it. Typically, your pool technician is the most reliable source of information because they are highly trained and experienced in this area.
  • Open the pool early rather than wait till summer is actually here. You’ll be out there working, sweating and feeling faint because the chores you have to do are physically exhausting and it’s so hot out. Another benefit to doing it early is to keep algae from thriving in damp, dark, warm places. You’ll also have an easier time getting an appointment with your pool technician, as they get booked up quite fast once warm weather hits. Lastly, take advantage of excellent sales at the pool supply store when you go in spring.
  • Turn the filter on and let it run. Start off with running it 24/7 until you see a vast improvement in the color. Once it’s no longer cloudy or green, reduce running time to 10 to 12 hours a day.
  • Clean your cover. Take it off, stretch it out next to the pool, then clean it thoroughly with a garden hose and scrub brush. Use simple water and soap, or pick up some special winter cover cleaner. Make sure it’s dry before you fold it up and store it in a cool, dry place for the summer.
  • Put in some shock. If you have a chlorine pool, be aware you have to shock the water in order to rid it of harmful bacteria as well as old chlorine that has lost its effectiveness.
