After losing his grandfather, father, and sister to heart disease, retired Toms River Police Detective Alex Scherer knew he couldn't ignore his own troubling symptoms. Shortness of breath and swollen ankles prompted him to get checked out, a decision that may have prevented a heart attack.

Scherer's story highlights a groundbreaking new heart imaging technology available at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, part of the Hackensack Meridian Health network. Bharath Sathya, M.D., director of cardiac imaging at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, recommended the Naeotom Alpha.Pro dual-source scanner, with photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) which provides clearer images with less radiation than traditional CT scans.

The scan revealed two significant blockages in Scherer's arteries. "I felt like a walking time bomb," he said. Thanks to this advanced screening, he received timely treatment and is now feeling great and exercising without issue.

Dr. Sathya says this technology is a game-changer, allowing for more accurate diagnoses and proactive care. "We really want to make sure patients are being scanned with as little radiation as possible," he says.
