Watch Out For Phone Scam, Monmouth County Sheriff Warns

MONMOUTH COUNTY, NJ — Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden is warning residents to keep an eye out for an ongoing phone scam.

According to Golden, the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has received reports that scammers are calling people at their workplaces, falsely identifying themselves as MCSO representatives.

The callers then claim that the person they're calling failed to report for jury duty and must immediately pay a fine to avoid arrest.

"Please be advised: NO member of the [Sheriff's Office] will ever call anyone and notify them that they failed to report for jury duty, demand payment over the phone, or claim there is an arrest warrant that can be resolved with immediate payment," Golden said.

If you receive a call like this, MCSO recommends that you:

• Hang up immediately
• Do not provide personal or financial information
• Do not send money or purchase gift cards or cryptocurrency to satisfy the caller's demands

"When it comes to scams, trust your instincts," Golden said. "If something doesn't seem right, it probably isn't."
