Breast Cancer Awareness

Why is early detection important?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it could not be more important! There are many reasons why it is pertinent to have widespread awareness about this disease that affects millions, probably one of the most important aspects is early detection.

Terms You Should Know

  • Screening: tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms.
  • Screening exams: to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms (like a lump that can be felt).
  • Early detection: using an approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed earlier than otherwise might have occurred.
  • Prognosis: outlook or chance of recovery from breast cancer.

Education is key when it comes to Breast Cancer Awareness. Did you know that ‘breast cancers that are found because they are causing symptoms tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast’? In a screening exam, if the cancer is found, it is more likely that it can be confined to the breast and stopped from spreading. During a screening, doctors will determine the prognosis of a patient with breast cancer by examining how far it has spread and the size of the existing cancer. Treatment and diagnosis can be successful if detected early and doctors estimate that early detection saves thousands of lives each year.
