Coastal storm on the way

A major rain storm is on the way tonight through tomorrow.

A coastal storm is brewing off the Mid Atlantic coast that will bring very heavy rain, strong winds, and some minor coastal flooding to the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas tonight on through tomorrow. Tranquil conditions will return for this weekend with warmer conditions on the way.

High pressure over the Hudson River Valley will drift towards New England today leading to increasing clouds through the day. Winds will veer from the northwest at northeast at 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will rise into the lower to mid 70’s for highs this afternoon throughout the region.

Rain will spread north into southern New Jersey by 5 PM and spread northward through the entire Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas through this evening. As the coastal low develops off the North Carolina coast and then lift northeastward through the New Jersey coastal waters through tomorrow. The rainfall will be heavy at times tonight on through tomorrow with rainfall amounts range from up to an inch over the interior to over two inches of rain along the coast. Localized flash flooding will be a threat along with coastal flooding and visibility below 2 miles. Winds will be from the northeast at 15 to 25 mph with gusts over 30 mph. Temperatures will range from the upper 50’s to lower 60’s for lows and mid 60’s for highs throughout the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas.

The rain will slowly taper off as scattered showers tomorrow afternoon and evening with clearing skies by Friday morning. Winds will back to the northwest at 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures on Friday will range from the upper 40’s to lower 50’s for lows and mid to upper 70’s for highs.

High pressure will be in complete control Saturday on through Tuesday with clear skies to scattered cloud cover. Temperatures will average near to slightly above normal through the period. Low temperatures will range from the upper 40’s to lower 50’s over the interior and mid to upper 50’s along the coast. High temperatures will range from the mid to upper 70’s throughout the northern Mid Atlantic.
