Deadly Car Crash Claims Lives Of Two Members Of Marlboro Family, A Third Injured

A crash involving five cars on Route 9 in Freehold Twp. Sunday afternoon, July 3, also left the driver of another car in serious condition.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP– Two people who died and another person severely injured when their car was hit in a multi-car crash Sunday afternoon on Route 9 were members of the same Marlboro family, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said Monday.

The victims were the occupants of a Honda CR-V that was rear-ended in the Freehold Township accident, said Chris Swendeman, the spokesperson.

He said because of the severe injuries to the driver, who survived but is in critical condition, notifications to next of kin are still taking place and the identities of the family members could not be released as yet.

On Sunday, the Freehold Township Police Department responded to a report at 1:28 p.m. of the crash near the intersection of Route 9 South and Route 33 westbound, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey said in a news release.

The investigation shows a 2019 Lexus NX, driven by a 74-year-old female from Manalapan, was travelling southbound on Route 9 when the vehicle side-swiped a 2015 black Lexus RX350, and then side-swiped a white 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, the prosecutor's office said.

The 2019 Lexus driven by the Manalapan woman then rear-ended the 2017 black Honda CR-V, in which the fatalities took place. The black Honda CR-V then rear-ended a 2009 purple Scion TC, the prosecutor's office said.

One of the passengers in the Honda CR-V, a 52-year-old female from Marlboro, was pronounced dead at the scene; a second passenger in the Honda CR-V, a 61-year-old male, also of Marlboro, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, the prosecutor's office said.

The driver of the Honda CR-V, a 21-year-old male of Marlboro, was also taken to a local hospital and is still in critical condition, Swendeman said Monday. All three were family members, he said, but could not discuss their relationship.

The driver of the 2019 Lexus was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, Swendeman confirmed Monday. Her identity has not yet been released.

The names of the hospitals where victims were taken was not specified, Swendeman said.

Other drivers and passengers sought medical attention for minor injuries, the prosecutor's office said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County SCART (Serious Collision Analysis Response Team) and the Freehold Township Police Department, the news release said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to assist the investigative team is urged to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Nicolas Logothetis at 800-533-7443, or Freehold Township Police Department Patrolman Justin Nunno at 732-462-7908.
