For the first time in a number of years, there will be an ecumenical sunrise Easter service in the Freehold area.
The idea was born a few years ago when two friends, Kathy Mulholland and Luanne Kip, were enjoying Olde Freehold Day at Lake Topanemus Park. With recent improvements to the already idyllic setting, the Park seemed a perfect venue for a sunrise service.
After getting permission to hold the event Easter morning service at the park from the Lake Topanemus Commission, Mulholland and Kip began spreading the word via social media and friends. They gathered a team that, so far, includes lay people or clergy representing Hope Lutheran, Bethel AME, St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic, and United Methodist churches. Several musicians are involved, as well, including members from the Joyful Noise Praise Band.
"The idea is to make this a meaningful celebration for all Christians, regardless of church affiliation, and for believers who don't have a church home, too," says Mulholland. "Everyone in the community is invited."
The event, "Sonrise at the Pond," will be Easter Morning (April 20) at 6:00 a.m. at the Lake Topanemus Park Pavilion (parking at Pond Road entrance). Attendees are encouraged to bring a camp/lawn chair.
Anyone wishing to help plan the service, or who has any questions, may contact Kathy Mulholland at kathymommy@aol.com.
