Enjoying Mojitos and Smores at Park Avenue Bistro

After a move from North Jersey, this columnist views the sights, sounds, and tastes of Freehold through fresh eyes.

Can a man drink a watermelon mojito and still feel like a man? Is it possible to get fresh and delicious seafood in little old Freehold? The answers to these questions and more can be found in the following...

It's Friday night and my girlfriend and I find ourselves at . Tonight is our first time trying this place and I'm excited.

A bottle of white wine is served. Abbie gets the tilapia and I get the shrimp fra diavolo. I don't usually order shrimp but I'm starving and want a nice bowl of pasta to fill my stomach up before the wine does.

One of the specials paired up an entree with watermelon salsa and a watermelon mojito. I like mojitos, though haven't had one in a long time because you tend to suck the sugary nectar down one after another and then before you know it you're waking up with a killer hangover. I also like watermelon but haven't had any in long time either, so I figure why not kill two birds with one pinkish sugar-infused alcoholic beverage.

I don't drink too often anymore as it doesn't mix with the meditation kick I'm on lately, but I do have one rule about drinking: a man can drink anything he wants to, but if it has an umbrella in it, he probably should be on a beach or somewhere people don't know his name.

According to that rule, I was just fine. Even if some people at my table didn't agree with me. The waitress, suspecting that I was paying the bill took my side. I promised not to say the word "mojito" in that annoying repetitive voice that people sometimes use when saying "mojito." You know the voice.

The food comes and the tilapia is a very delicious and generous portion perfectly seasoned. After ordering my shrimp fra diavolo I had second thoughts. They were all shattered as I took a bite. The sauce had that perfect mixture of hot and sweet that a sauce should have. Everything was cooked perfectly.

After dinner we are whisked away to a romantic summer campfire scene roasting marshmallows. Or at least that's the way it feels when they bring over a small fire surrounded by all the ingredients to cook up our own smores. We enjoy a sticky chocolatey mess of a dessert and are off into the night talking excitedly of all the friends we'll bring for our next trip to Park Avenue Bistro.

So if you're looking for a fun night out (live music on the weekends) with good seafood and a cozy atmosphere you might want to check out Park Avenue Bistro. If you see a guy trying to secretly drink a glass full of watermelon come say hi!

You can find Park Avenue Bistro at 618 Park Avenue in Freehold. For more info check their Web site.
