Equal Pay Alert: Republican Sen. Beck Attempts Roadblock

Beck is only Woman Senator to vote "No" to Equal Pay Measure

TRENTON - Republican Senator Jennifer Beck was the only woman in the New Jersey Senate to vote “No” to the New Jersey Legislature’s Equal Pay bill.

When asked to explain their position, Senator Beck called the bill “window dressing” and Governor Christie claimed the bill is “nonsensical” and “very business unfriendly.”

Bill S-992 prohibits unequal pay for substantially similar work, enables women to demand back pay to compensate for discriminatory payment, and prohibits employer retaliation against employees for disclosing compensation, among other provisions. After passing both houses of the legislature with overwhelming margins in February of 2016, the bill was conditionally vetoed by Governor Christie.

Beck, who is up for reelection in November, saw backlash from constituents when over 160 protesters gathered outside her Red Bank office demanding that Beck support efforts to close the wage gap in New Jersey.

The bill is supported and sponsored in the General Assembly by Beck’s Democratic district mates, Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey.
