Fatal Car Crash in Freehold Twp. Remains Under Investigation

Authorities are not yet releasing the identities of the victims of a fatal car crash Sunday afternoon; two others remain hospitalized.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, NJ – A car crash Sunday that took the lives of two people and severely injured another person, all from the same family, is still under investigation, a spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday.

Two people died and a 21-year-old male was severely injured when their car was hit in a multi-car crash on Route 9. The three are from the same Marlboro family, authorities confirmed Monday.

The victims were the occupants of a Honda CR-V that was rear-ended in the Freehold Township accident, said Chris Swendeman, the spokesperson.

On Sunday, the Freehold Township Police Department responded to a report at 1:28 p.m. of the crash near the intersection of Route 9 South and Route 33 westbound, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey said in a news release.

The investigation shows a 2019 Lexus NX, driven by the 74-year-old female from Manalapan, was travelling southbound on Route 9 when the vehicle side-swiped a 2015 black Lexus RX350, and then side-swiped a white 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, the prosecutor's office said.

The 2019 Lexus driven by the Manalapan woman then rear-ended the 2017 black Honda CR-V, in which the fatalities took place. The black Honda CR-V then rear-ended a 2009 purple Scion TC, the prosecutor's office said.

One of the passengers in the Honda CR-V, a 52-year-old female from Marlboro, was pronounced dead at the scene; a second passenger in the Honda CR-V, a 61-year-old male, also of Marlboro, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, the prosecutor's office said Monday.

The driver of the Honda CR-V, a 21-year-old male of Marlboro, was taken to a local hospital and is still in critical condition, Swendeman confirmed Tuesday. All three are family members, he said, but could not discuss their relationship.

The driver of the 2019 Lexus was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, Swendeman confirmed Monday. Her identity also has not yet been released, he said Tuesday.

The names of the hospitals where victims were taken was not specified, Swendeman said.

Other drivers and passengers sought medical attention for minor injuries, the prosecutor's office said.
