Freehold Area Running Club Is on the Mark

The Freehold Area Running Club combines the love of running with charitable causes to create a rewarding experience.

The concept of a club is to gather like-minded people to join together. Since 1983, the Freehold Area Running Club has done just that.

The original site for these “Lovers of Jogging” was Liberty Oak Park and there were 43 charter members. Now, the FARC is the group to join to share your love of running with over 400 members. There are no age requirements; older runners experience the “rush” with teenagers, while grandparents can run with their grandchildren. Special children’s races make everyone proud.

Meetings are held in parks where after the run, members will discuss the important issues at hand. The FARC is a charitable organization. They have been known to donate thousands of dollars to diversified causes around New Jersey. This includes a generous pre-Christmas drive for Toys for Tots. Some money is raised through races that are sponsored throughout the year.

Approximately 25 races will take place within the running season, and everyone is invited. FARC is directly responsible for five 5K Winter Series races, the St. Patrick’s Day 10-mile and the Toys for Tots 5K, as well as six 5K Summer Series races and Kids Summer Night at Monmouth Battlefield State Park; not to mention this columnist’s personal favorite, “Born to Run”: a five-mile race in Freehold. For information about the upcoming races the interested party can go to FARCNJ.com.

The runners make up a tight knit family who cares about each other. There are Sunday Runs at the Reservoir, where they can enjoy the time together, as well as a celebratory banquet held to reward the talent and hard work of outstanding members. To help the young affiliates, there is a scholarship rewarding outstanding community support, athleticism and academic achievement awarded to a deserving student. The applicants have to be members for at least three years.

The love of running is celebrated at the club. Their Web site is filled with snapshots of glorious photo finishes, races and events. There are pictorials galore that capture the exhilarating feeling of participating in a race as well as recently posted press. Check out the site and if you have the inclination to run – new members are always welcome.
