Have you heard the news?
Freehold Borough is celebrating one hundred years of incorporation in 2019.
Many of you may know that “Freehold” was actually established over 325 years ago. But did you know that, for economic reasons, the residents in town elected to become incorporated? On January 17, 1919, a resolution was passed to create new incorporation legislation and was subsequently approved by the state government. A special election was held on July 8, 1919: 398 residents voted yes, 98 voted no. Interestingly, there were 4,700 Borough residents and 1,500 Township residents at that time. The first mayor was elected on September 8, 1919 and we officially became known as Freehold Borough.
