Freehold Borough To Take Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs

FREEHOLD, NJ — Do you keep any unused prescription medications in your medicine cabinet? This is your chance to safely dispose of them.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday, April 30, and the Freehold Borough Police Department is organizing the opportunity to dispose of any unused and expired prescription drugs.

The initiative's goal is to help residents rid their medicine cabinets of opioid painkillers, in addition to any other unneeded prescription medications. The Freehold Borough police station will serve as a drop-off location on April 30 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

This disposal event will also collect vape pens and other e-cigarette devices only after the batteries are removed earlier. No syringes, sharp instruments, liquid medications, or solutions will be accepted.

Overdose deaths in the United States reached a new high last year, with over 100,000 reported in the 12-month period ending April 2021. According to a DEA report, the majority of overdoses are caused by opioids and synthetic opioids such as prescription pain relievers and fentanyl.

Prescription and over-the-counter drugs are frequently discovered by teenagers in their home medicine cabinets or on kitchen shelves.
