Freehold Twp Car Burglaries Prompt 'Lock Up' Reminder

Police say there have been items stolen from unlocked vehicles in the Independence Square area.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, NJ —Freehold Township police are urging residents to lock their cars following reports of items being stolen in the Independence Square development recently.

"We strongly recommend all our residents take the following steps to avoid being a victim," the department said in a post on Facebook. "1. Remove your belongings; 2. Lock your cars; 3. Remove all keys and key fobs."

Towns throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties have been urging residents to lock up and take their key fobs out of their vehicles because of burglaries and the thefts of high-end vehicles.

"These basic steps can go a long way to reducing the number of motor vehicle burglaries," police said.

If you see anyone in your neighborhood who appears suspicious, police urge you to call 911 immediately or call the department at 732-462-7500.
