High pressure promises tranquil weekend weather

High pressure will produce cold conditions once again today with temperatures averaging well below normal for this time of year, however the same high pressure system will produce tranquil weather conditions through Sunday afternoon with temperatures rebounding to near normal levels by Sunday. A rain storm will kick off the start of next week with some wintery mischief possible for the Thanksgiving weekend.

High pressure will slowly move over the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas today on through Sunday with clear skies to scattered cloud cover. Winds will be from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph through this evening, backing to the southwest at 5 to 15 mph by tomorrow afternoon on through Sunday. Temperatures this afternoon will rise into the mid to upper 30’s for highs. Low temperatures tomorrow morning will range from the lower to mid 10’s over the interior, upper 10’s to lower 20’s over the western suburbs of Philadelphia and New York City, and lower to mid 20’s along the immediate coast. Temperatures tomorrow afternoon will rebound into the upper 30’s to lower 40’s over the interior and lower to mid 40’s along the coast. Temperatures on Sunday will range from the lower to mid 30’s for lows and lower to mid 50’s for highs, which is around normal for this time of year.

A strong area of low pressure will lift north from the southern Plains to the Great Lakes Sunday night into Monday. This low pressure system will drive a warm front through the region on Monday morning followed by a cold front on Monday afternoon. Periods of rain can be expected late Sunday night on through Monday morning followed by widely scattered showers in the early afternoon and then another round of moderate to heavy rainfall Monday evening with the cold front. Temperatures will range from the mid to upper 40’s for lows and lower to mid 60’s for highs.

High pressure will build into the region on Tuesday with clearing skies and falling temperatures through the day. Early morning highs will range from the mid to upper 50’s and then fall through the 50’s, 40’s, and 30’s through the afternoon and evening.

With cold air build into the region, a wave of low pressure will develop over the Mid Atlantic coastal waters and slowly lift northeast towards the New England coastal waters. Periods of rain and snow showers can be expected as a result for Wednesday and Thursday. The details of the track, strength, and precipitation field is still very much uncertain. However, at this time, no snowfall accumulation is expected along the coast and only minor snowfall accumulations are a threat for the interior locations above 500 feet. Temperatures on Wednesday will range from the lower to mid 30’s for lows and mid 40’s for highs. Temperatures on Thursday, Thanksgiving, will range from the upper 20’s to lower 30’s for lows and upper 30’s to lower 40’s for highs.
