The Holiday Girl
Cheryl Gibson, Zumba Instructor at Centra State Fitness ,fosters diversity and unity as she celebrates each and every holiday with dance.
Many feel that the spirit of the holiday season has diminished in response to the times in which we live. Sadly, the vitriol we often see on Facebook or Twitter has taken precedence over celebratory postings. I want to honor a person who works to bring people together when division is the math of choice. Cheryl Gibson, Zumba Instructor at Centra State Fitness and Wellness Center is that person and I am personally writing this to call attention to the enthusiasm in which she celebrates what makes us unique and fosters good will.
Cheryl’s classes are always excellent but are especially enjoyable during holiday weeks. She will always dress in costume; download music that fits the celebration and make sure everyone in class leaves with a little gift and a big smile. This is all done at her own expense, out of her love for people and her desire to combine happiness with awareness.
Today was the Chanukah celebration. The class included people of all religions and nationalities yet everyone wore blue. Cheryl came sporting athleticwear specifically designed for the Festival of Lights featuring a pattern utilizing The Star of David. Although she is not Jewish , she honored those who are with several appropriate songs. At one point, we all formed a circle and danced the Hora. I loved listening to members of the class ask questions regarding the holiday. A clergyman wanted to know why we were wearing blue. A member promised to look it up and give us the answer at the next class.

With Cheryl we have celebrated Veterans Day, Halloween. Thanksgiving, Kwanza, Christmas and more.. Everyone in class participates and we become inclusive, not exclusive which is the way the world should be. I want to extend my thanks and congratulate this wonderful person for putting unity above everything else while creating an environment that fosters understanding and good will with music and laughter. On a personal note, I want to thank her for being my friend.
