How Can You Get Rid of Pool Algae?
Pool Maintenance NJ - Of course it would happen on the weekend you’re holding your annual summer barbecue. You stepped outside on Saturday morning and noticed the pool isn’t its normal shade of clear blue. It’s green! What do you do? Algae can be the bane of a pool owner’s existence. This small plant-like organism comes in three common forms: green or blue algae, yellow or mustard algae, and black algae.
Green is the most common by far and thus the easiest to get rid of. Yellow, oftentimes mistaken for pollen or sand, isn’t quite as easy to deal with but it’s pretty common. And black is the hardest of all to kill, although it’s not as common as the other two. You have a few options available to you when plagued with pool algae:
Pool Shock
It may take a few shocks to get your pool looking normal again. It all depends on the color of your pool right now. With three stages of algae infestation ranging from light to dark, it’s important to recognize which stage you’re at.
- Light green pool water: double shock
- Dark green water, triple shock
- Black green pool water, quadruple shock
Pool Floc
Floc is a chemical that removes the algae floating in the pool water, clumping it together so that it falls to the bottom and you can easily vacuum it up. Short for flocculant, this product can be found in any pool store. Without it, it can be very hard or even impossible to get out all the algae particles.
Pool Algaecide
Many pool owners add algaecide here and there throughout the summer as a preventative measure. When you have a pretty bad case of algae infestation, it’s time to up your game. Pick up the strong stuff: algaecide that contains B14 or metals like copper and silver that are designed to kill algae quickly. The amount you put in will depend on your type and size of pool. Read the manufacturer directions before using.
