How Can You Keep Mice and Rodents Out of Your Pool Heater?

Good question. It's tough to keep mice and other rodents out of your pool heater, just as it is for your attic and shed.

Good question. It's tough to keep mice and other rodents out of your Pool Heater, just as it is for your attic and shed. However, if you take the necessary precautions beyond simply inspecting your heater throughout the year, you will be met with success. Nesting in your pool heater is an expensive problem, because not only do you face paying for an exterminator, you also have to pay to get your pool heater fixed. That’s because mice and rodents tend to chew through wires and other important components, leading to a lot of damage and headache.

Check out these tips to stopping mice in their tracks: Pick up Some Supplies

Make a trip to the hardware store and buy the following items:

Put Moth Balls Inside Control Panel

Just inside the control panel, place a few moth balls in an effort to deter rodents from getting in there and wreaking havoc. They hate the smell and will leave.

Seal up Those Cracks

If you detect any cracks or gaps, stuff some steel wool inside so the mice can’t squeeze through. If they somehow manage to keep going and eat the steel wool, they will cut their mouths, eventually dying from the toxic effects.

Cover with Cloth

Cover the exterior of the unit with ¼-inch hardware cloth to cover exposed areas as an additional barrier to entry so mice can’t chew through it.

Install Wood Paneling

Attach wood paneling over the exterior of the pool heater for an additional barrier that will keep away any mouse or rodent. If they can somehow get past the paneling, they must be super mice and should be congratulated!

Scatter Snakes Around the Unit

For additional protection, place a few rubber snakes around the exterior of the pool heater. Snakes are natural predators of mice, so they will get scared and back off.

Before turning on your pool heater in the spring or summer, take everything off and out, including the moth balls and steel wool, or you’ll have an even bigger problem on your hands.

Is it too late? Do you already suspect rodent infestation? Call up an exterminator to get rid of the nest or do it yourself. Just don’t forget to turn off the power to the heater first. Once the nest is gone, you’ll have to make repairs to the heater. Call the skilled technicians at Central Jersey Pools to repair any wires and components that may have been damaged. We do a safe, efficient job.
