Managing diabetes during the most tempting time of the year
Connecting with local fitness, food and support resources in New Jersey to help manage the physical and mental stress of diabetes.

As we enter the season of sports parties and holiday meals, many people start to worry about managing their weight. This is especially true for people facing diabetes
About 22% of adults 65 years and older in New Jersey have diabetes. Whether you or someone you care about is managing diabetes - or you want to prevent the disease - healthy diet and exercise are a classic prescription. Luckily, local programs make it simple and even fun! Here are two things you can do this fall to reduce the impact on your family’s health:
Go for a bike ride. Biking is great low-impact exercise, and it's especially good for people who are heavier and whose joints may be bothered by running or walking. Not to mention its just fun! "There are just so many great places to ride no matter how experienced you are," said Mitch Rovins of Beacon Cycling. A local favorite is Estell Manor Park. "It’s a great option because it has 2 trail systems, paved and unpaved, and it’s good for families." New Jersey also has three My City Bikes guides that are made for people who just want to ride a bike for fun or transportation. The apps are a free guide to local biking and have a lot of handy information, too.

Cook some food. AtlantiCare hosts a diabetes cooking class. For just $5 you can learn hands-on about how to cook low-fat, low-carb, yet delicious recipes" from a bona fide chef, and enjoy a lunch! Two courses are available in Hammonton this fall, and registration is available at http://www.atlanticare.org/ind... (hint: choose "Diabetes" from the "Class/Topic" dropdown menu).
Talk about it. Whether you struggle with Diabetes yourself or care for a loved one who is, it can be incredibly stressful and overwhelming. While exercise and eating right can help you feel better both physically and emotionally, sometimes you simply need someone to talk to. Professional counseling can be expensive. Luckily, monthly diabetes community groups are available to New Jersey residents. They’re a great place to find people who understand what you’re going through and find support and solutions together. Professional facilitators run the free sessions.
