Monmouth County Fair Shuts Down Ride After Deadly Ohio Crash (Video)

A New Jersey fair ride similar to the one that malfunctioned in Ohio, leading to one death and seven injuries, has been shut down.

A New Jersey fair has taken out of service a ride similar to the one that malfunctioned, killing one and injuring seven others at the Ohio State Fair on Wednesday (see video below).

Officials confirmed to Patch that the Monmouth County Fair took "The Claw," which was billed as an "aggressive thrill ride," out of service. A safety inspection will be conducted and the ride could become operational before the fair ends on Sunday, county officials said.

The ride was open when the fair began on Wednesday but was taken out of service Thursday morning after its operator, Reithoffer, was notified about the Ohio incident.

The same ride as the one that malfunctioned in Ohio also operated at the State Fair Meadowlands several weeks ago, according to ABC6. That ride was operated by Amusements of America, a Middlesex County, N.J.-based company, and was reportedly one of the most popular rides at the Ohio State Fair

The ride was repeatedly checked and cleared for safety, Ohio Director of Agriculture David Daniels said on Wednesday night.

Eleven rides were not cleared to open on the first day of the Ohio State Fair, Daniels told the Associated Press. However, the Fire Ball was not one of those rides and had been cleared for use.

When the ride did break down Wednesday, it began swinging like a pendulum before striking an object and hurling riders to the ground.

As of Wednesday night, three of the above victims were in critical condition. A spokesperson for the Ohio State Highway Patrol said no update on their status was immediately available.
