Monmouth Sheriff Offers Safe Exchange Zone

If you're looking for a place to complete a Craigslist transaction or to hand off kids during a custody exchange, consider this spot.

FREEHOLD, NJ — As more people become aware of internet safety issues, the Monmouth County sheriff's office is joining a growing number of law enforcement agencies offering safe exchange zones.

The Safe Exchange Zone, set up outside of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, gives people a place to exchange items sold on sites like Craigslist, or for those who have child custody issues.

The zone includes two parking spots in the front of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, located at 2500 Kozloski Road in Freehold and is under video surveillance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"Nothing is more important than maintaining the safety and security of the residents in Monmouth County and this is another step to help ensure that effort," Sheriff Shaun Golden said. "In-person internet transactions have become an extremely popular way for people to buy and sell items, but they can also be a risk."

The safe exchange zone gives residents a place to conduct their business, often with strangers, that minimizes their exposure to danger, Golden said.

"With the holiday season here, the use of in-person transactions is likely to increase, but buyers must beware. These types of sales have created opportunities for criminals and as a result crimes have been committed throughout the country," Golden said.

In addition to increased safety regarding e-commerce transactions through online buyers from websites, the zone creates a safer environment to protect those dealing with child custody issues.

The zone can be used at any time; residents just have to make arrangements to meet there.

"The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office recommends transactions take place during daylight hours," Golden said.
