Nutritional Supplements Every Woman Should Know
Hot flashes, Migraines, Low Libido? Important health changes affecting women today

National Women's Health Week
By Dr. Steven Zodkoy - Monmouth Advanced Medicine
We are raising the awareness of National Women's Health Week with important nutritional needs and requirements that are often overlooked by healthcare professionals for women. There are several nutritional supplements that can help address these special needs safely and effectively.
Hot Flashes are best addressed by taking DHEA supplements. I recommend that my patients take 10-50mg first thing in thing in the morning. DHEA is an important precursor to progesterone, estrogen and testosterone. DHEA is highest in the morning and reduces as the day goes on, supplementing in the morning mimics the normal pattern.

Migraines, especially those associated with menstrual cycles, are linked to a slow liver detoxification system. There are several nutritional supplements that can safely increase the liver’s ability to detoxify increased hormone levels associated with migraines. My top recommendations are a daily dose of: Glutamine 500 mg, Milk Thistle 500 mg, N-Acetyl Cysteine 200 mg and Artichoke 500 mg.

Thyroid issues are especially common in women and contribute to hair loss, weight gain, and temperature control. Lugol's Solution has been used for over 100 years to provide Iodine to the thyroid. I have used as a first line of treatment for patients with hypo and hyper thyroidism with excellent results. Hypothyroid suffers will also benefit from the amino acid Tyrosine. Hyperthyroid sufferers can use Bugleweed to restore normal function. Many women feel that have a slow thyroid but their lab tests are normal; Gugal is an herb that converts inactive thyroid hormone T4 to the active for T3 to give a little boost to your body. The dosage amount depends on your weight and health issue.

Collagen is the protein of youth helping to reduce skin wrinkles, brittle hair and nails and restoring strength to muscles and joints.
Ovarian cysts cause suffering for many women on a monthly basis. Ovarian cysts tend to swell during ovulation and may switch from side to side monthly. The mineral Selenium 100 mcg and vitamin E 35mg taken daily can prevent cysts.
Bladder infections, mild incontinence, and an urge to go are complaints I often her from my female patients. Uva-Ursi at 300mg a day is a cure all herb for bladder issues. Uva-Ursi works by acting as a anti-microbial and by relaxing the bladder so that it holds more volume and a force greater amount of voiding. Many women consider Uva-Ursi to be a must have after giving birth to restore normal bladder function damaged during pregnancy.

Low libido is not just an issue for men. Miura Puama at 100-1500 mg/day has proven to be an excellent aphrodisiac. Miura Puama has been shown to improve desire and to reduce overall stress, two key ingredients to an improved sex life.
At Monmouth Advanced Medicine, we understand that women often need specialized nutritional supplementation to help with their unique biochemistry.
The nutritional needs of women are not always the same as those for men.
