One Labor Day Weekend, Two Seasons

This Labor Day weekend will start off with early Fall like conditions and end with mid Summer like weather with the threat for thunderstorms

This Labor Day weekend will start off with early Fall like conditions and end with mid Summer like weather with the threat for showers and strong to severe thunderstorms.

Today through tomorrow, high pressure over the eastern Great Lakes will slide to the New England coastal waters leading to clear skies to scattered cloud cover. Winds will be light and variable through tomorrow morning, and then will develop out of the south at 5 to 10 mph by tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures this afternoon will range from the mid to upper 70’s over the northern interior, New York City metropolitan area, and the immediate coast and upper 70’s to lower 80’s over the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Low temperatures will range from the lower to mid 50’s over the northern interior, mid to upper 50’s over the immediate western suburbs of Philadelphia and New York City, and upper 50’s to lower 60’s in urban areas and along the coast. Temperatures tomorrow will be slightly warmer with highs in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s over the interior, New York City metropolitan area, and immediate coast and lower to mid 80’s over the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

An area of low pressure over the central Plains this morning will drive towards New England by Monday morning. A warm front will drive through the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas on Sunday with increasing clouds and the threat for widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Humidity will significantly increase throughout the region as winds veer to the southwest at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts. The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of wind gusts over 40 mph, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning. Temperatures will range from the mid to upper 60’s for lows and mid to upper 80’s for highs.

On Monday, the cold front will follow with scattered clouds and widely scattered showers and strong to severe thunderstorms. The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of frequent lightning, hail, wind gusts over 40 mph, and very heavy downpours. Winds will veer from the southwest to northwest at 5 to 15 mph with higher gusts. Temperatures will range from the upper 60’s to lower 70’s for lows and mid to upper 80’s for highs.

High pressure will briefly build into the region on Tuesday with scattered cloud cover expected. A cold front will follow on Wednesday with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. High pressure will take hold on Thursday with clearing skies. Temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will range from the upper 60’s to lower 70’s for lows and mid 80’s along the coast and upper 80’s to lower 90’s throughout the rest of the region for highs. Temperatures on Thursday will be slightly cool with temperatures in the lower to mid 60’s for lows and lower to mid 80’s for highs.
