Pool Pool Safety: A Guide - In Ground Pool Marlboro
No matter which kind of pool you have, your responsibility as the owner is to make it safe for everyone who wants to enjoy it. Pools are fun, refreshing ways to spend your summer, but those backyard barbecues can turn tragic in an instant. From drownings to paralysis, be prepared for any eventuality by following some important pool safety rules. Post those rules and follow them, making sure everyone knows what they are.
According to the CDC, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children under the age of 14. The Red Cross says more than 200 young children drown in backyard swimming pools each year. Heed these tips to avoid those accidents:
· Install an in-water pool alarm that will go off if someone falls in.

· Install gates that meet minimum local requirements, typically at least four feet tall with no more than four inches between vertical slats.
· Test the lock occasionally so you know it’s working. Make sure it’s complicated enough that small children can’t work it alone. Latches should be self closing; while you’re at it, install an alarm on the gate that goes off when opened.

· Remove all objects on the ground outside the gates that can act as a stepping stone for kids and pets.
· Have your child take swimming lessons.
· Remove all toys and floats from the water when not in use so as not to tempt anyone to jump in when unsupervised.
· Remove ladders and steps when not in use in above ground pools.
· Install an in-water pool alarm that will sound if someone accidentally falls in.
· Keep your cell or home phone with you at all times when in the pool area so you don’t have to go inside to answer it.
· Enroll in a CPR class.
· Keep all windows and doors inside the home locked so little ones can’t escape into the pool area on their own.
· Keep rescue equipment within easy reach in the pool area.
· Post rules by the pool and enforce them. These can include no running on the decking and always swim with a friend.
· Do not allow diving in above ground pools or shallow ends of inground pools. Make sure people dive only from diving boards and not the sides of the pool.
· Equip all young and inexperienced swimmers with life jackets to wear while in or around the pool.
· Keep all electrical appliances away from the water.
· Regularly maintain, test and adjust the water in your pool or hot tub. Keep it clean and clear through maintenance of the proper chemical levels, circulation and filtration. This will help keep earaches, rashes or more serious diseases at bay.
