Return to La Cipollina

La Cipollina was a favorite of mine twenty years ago and is a favorite of mine today.

When I moved to this area, my husband and I discovered La Cipollina for the first time. The excellent food and service made for an enjoyable evening and the proximity to our Marlboro home did save us money on babysitting. I am not sure why we stopped going. Life probably got in the way. The kids had early soccer games and my long commute to work motivated take out and early bedtimes on weekends. Recently, while walking on Main Street, I passed this old favorite and it was like time stood still. The restaurant was still beautifully landscaped. The Patio area was secluded and the interior was full of ambiance. Although in most cases you can't go home again, I decided to revisit this favorite haunt.

Last night, two friends and I went to La Cipollina for my belated birthday celebration and the experience was so positive I decided to write this article. The acoustics were remarkable in that you can actually hear yourself talk, unlike the majority of restaurants in this area. Chris, the Maitre D recognized that our waiter had two large tables and took our table to guarantee we had proper service. He,was a charming young man who made us laugh, and saw to our every need. He made sure I had a gluten free option that was tasty. I always love a BYO restaurant and Chris kept our glasses full and the champagne properly iced. My friends ordered the veal. Marsha said it was the tenderest veal she ever recalls eating. I had the salmon. It was plated with a lime pesto that was absolutely delicious. I was even able to substitute a vegetable for my potato. At seven o'clock, a young duo came in to serenade us with contemporary songs that did not overpower the conversations. My friend Iris said their rendition of "Shallow" was excellent. Chris did not rush us. We sat and talked over coffee, listening to music and extending our evening. I was even treated to a birthday dessert ( with candle) to acknowledge my special day. We thanked Chris for a wonderful evening and I knew that I would return soon. In a world where we celebrate the "Flavor of the Day", it is easy to forget a restaurant that has been a staple in our community for as long as I have lived here. La Cipollina is a restaurant that provides the customer with excellent service, delicious food and on this particular Friday evening, a wonderful dining experience.
