Spring Freeze Cancels Pick-Your-Own Apples At Battleview Orchards

FREEHOLD, NJ — Battleview Orchards will not have Pick-Your-Own Apples this fall due to a spring freeze, the orchard recently announced.

In an update posted to Battleview's Facebook page on Friday, the orchard said that while they won't host Pick-Your-Own Apples this fall, they have been fortunate enough to source apples from their neighbors in New York.

"Our first pressing of apple cider took place this week and is now available in our Country Store," Battleview said. "We also have several varieties of fresh apples available. The varieties will change throughout the season, so be sure to keep checking back for your favorites!"

While Battleview won't host Pick-Your-Own Apples for the fall season, their Sunflower Field will be open for Pick-Your-Own starting in September, and pumpkins will open in Mid-September along with hayrides.

The orchard thanked customers for their "continued patience and understanding as we navigate this challenging season."

"Fall will look a little different at Battleview this year, but we will still have all the fall favorites you love — hot apple cider donuts, fresh pies, baked goods, hot cider, cider slush, seasonal specialty goods, Halloween carving kits, and so much more!"

"We are looking forward to making the best of the Fall season with all of you!"

News of Battleview cancelling Pick-Your-Own Apples for the fall season comes after the orchard announced a "near total loss" in fruit crops in the spring.

According to the orchard, an extreme fluctuation in temperature toward the end of April led to the loss of the farm’s fruit crops.

While they were hoping that some of the fruit would survive, Battleview said their sour cherry, peach, nectarine and apple crops suffered a “near total loss.”

Battleview Orchards isn't the only farm to suffer the loss of its fruit crops either.

Toward the end of May, Governor Mikie Sherrill sent a letter to Secretary Rollins of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, seeking to unlock federal relief for New Jersey growers facing “devastating losses following an unprecedented April freeze event.”

According to Sherrill, the state experienced an “unusual weather sequence that devastated the agricultural sector” in mid-April.

A prolonged warm spell was followed by a “sharp temperature drop,” with lows in the 20s recorded across parts of New Jersey between April 19 and April 22.

This timing was particularly destructive, as crops were in a critical development stage when the freeze hit, Sherrill said.

This resulted in “severe injury to blossoms and newly forming fruit.”
