Stormy weather for the busiest week of travel

An active week of weather is in store for the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas which of course lines up with the most active week of travel in the United States, the week of Thanksgiving. This week the northern Mid Atlantic will experience record high temperatures (today) with highs in the 60’s and 70’s, rain, and then snow. Then to end the week, below normal temperatures. You get every thing, just like a Thanksgiving dinner!

A warm front will continue to lift north this morning with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall expected. The rain will continue to lift north and will be north of the New York City metropolitan area by 10 AM at the latest. Scattered clouds with widely scattered showers will be a threat through the rest of the morning into the evening hours. Winds will be from the southwest at 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 60’s over the interior and upper 60’s to lower 70’s along the coast.

A cold front will follow tonight with lingering showers in the evening followed by clearing skies towards morning. Winds will veer to the west at 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will fall slowly into the mid to upper 40’s over the interior and upper 40’s to lower 50’s along the coast.

High pressure from the Great Lakes will briefly be in control tomorrow morning with scattered clouds before clouds begin to increase through the afternoon and evening. An area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico will intensify and lift northeast towards the coastal waters of South Carolina by tomorrow afternoon leading to the increasing cloud cover. Winds will veer to the north at 10 to 20 mph as a result towards evening. Temperatures will rise into the lower to mid 50’s for highs throughout the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan areas.

The area of low pressure will lift north towards the New Jersey coastal waters by Wednesday evening. Periods of rain and snow will move into the region. The rain/snow mix will change over to rain along the coast on Wednesday while a winter mix will continue over the interior. Cold air will slowly work in from the interior to the coast leading to the wintery mix to first go over to all snow. By the time the cold air reaches the coast, most of the precipitation will be done leading to just a few snow showers or a period of light snow on Thanksgiving morning. Temperatures on Wednesday will fall into the upper 20’s to lower 30’s over the interior and mid 30’s along the coast. High temperatures on Wednesday will range from the upper 30’s to lower 40’s throughout the region. Temperatures on Thanksgiving morning will fall into the mid to upper 20’s over the interior and lower to mid 30’s along the coast.

High pressure will take hold by the afternoon on Thanksgiving and remain in control through Sunday with scattered cloud cover and seasonable temperatures expected. High temperatures on Thanksgiving will rise into the upper 30’s to lower 40’s over the interior and lower to mid 40’s along the coast. Temperatures on Friday will range from the lower to mid 20’s for lows and mid to upper 30’s for highs. Temperatures on Saturday will range from the upper 10’s to lower 20’s for lows and upper 30’s to lower 40’s for highs. Temperatures on Sunday will range from the upper 20’s to lower 30’s for lows and lower to mid 40’s for highs.
