Swimming Pool Owners: Here are Some Money Saving Tips

Being a pool owner isn’t always cheap. But we can save you money on some short cuts and tips. You can save yourself money and trips to the pool store, as well as on electricity to run your pump. Of course, we are always around if you need our help. Check out these money-saving tips:

  • Do a DIY closing: For an above ground pool, why not try closing it yourself this fall? Hiring a professional can cost upwards of $250, money that you may want to keep in your wallet. However, it’s important to research the process thoroughly before attempting because if you do something wrong or skip a step, you will pay for it later. There are many things to consider, from adding chemicals to removing drain plugs. Call a professional if you don’t have the time, patience or skill to attempt a DIY closing.
  • Put on a solar cover: Use a solar cover in conjunction with your pool heater to help keep the heat inside the pool as well as keep out debris. Run the heater, then place the cover on all night to retain the desired temperature. Look into using a liquid solar blanket at a cheaper cost, with easier usage as well.
  • Keep it clean: Keep your pool cover clean and free from debris throughout winter. Remove any accumulating water from the cover on a regular basis using your pool cover pump. Then, when dry, get off all the leaves and debris with a broom.
  • Shock every week: You may think everything is going well, you’re treating your pool, shocking it weekly, and then decide to skip a week. Bad idea! All of sudden, your pool has turned green and murky and you have to triple shock it just to return to its previous levels. This can get expensive!
  • Store your vacuum properly: This means store it brush-side-up in a cool place outside of direct sun. When you store it brush-down, you damage the bristles. Replacing the vacuum head gets costly, so store it right to double its life.
  • Use baking soda instead of alkalinity increaser. Is your pool too alkaline? Instead of the more costly alkalinity increaser from the pool store, use some baking soda to save money. Don’t use too much, though, because it could turn your water slightly cloudy.
  • Run the pump at off peak hours: By running the pump at night, you’re saving on electricity. That’s because the electricity company charges the most during peak times of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
