'The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon' Comes to FHS

The Freehold High School fall play will feature 64 students.

The drama club promises another visually striking performance with their production of The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon by Don Zoldis.

The play features characters from familiar and obscure Brothers Grimm fairy tales. All 209 stories are combines for comedic effect in the fast-paced production.

“The basic concerpt of the show is that there is a team of actors and their goal for the evening is to perform all the fairy tales in 90 minutes and make them all fit together. So you’ll have character from the Rapunzel story in the Hansel and Gretel story and characters from Hansel and Gretel in the Fishergirl story,” said KasiAnn Iacobino, the Freehold High School drama club advisor and the play’s director.

The production is made up of 64 cast members, including 45 with speaking parts, she said. Iacobino explained that The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon is usually performed in colleges and this was the first time it will be performed in the Freehold Regional School District.

“It’s a family friendly show—clean language, clean fun,” she said.

Iacobino has been leading the drama club for four years and she said the students have embraced her interest in more elaborate and less traditional plays and musicals.

“I go for the more off-the-wall things. I like being challenged by what theater can be. A show like this can be very challenging because of the amount of speaking parts and students involved. With (the spring musical), we decided to do the updated version because it’s more fun. This next spring musical is going to be The Little Shop of Horrors,” Iacobino said.

Nicole Capobianco, a Freehold High School senior and the co-president of the drama club, said The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon has been the most exciting production of her high school theater experience.

“We’ve had so much fun with this one. We’ve been given so much liberty to create and work around. It’s been really awesome,” Capobianco said.

The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon will run Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, No. 19 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Freehold High School theater. Tickets cost $10.
