Top Tips for Choosing Pool Fencing
It's necessary to meet the mandated pool fencing requirements set forth by your town for height, type, gate and more.
Top Tips for Choosing Pool Fencing
Pool fencing is not mandated by the federal government; rather, your local and state government will set those laws. However, even if your town doesn’t legally require a pool fence on your property, your insurance company may. That’s why it’s necessary to meet the mandated requirements set forth by your town for height, type, gate and more. Call your town offices to find out the requirements.
However, in general, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends fences meet these parameters:
- Height: Fences should be four feet high or taller.
- Structure: Must be climb-proof to keep children out of the pool area.
- Gate: Must open outward away from the pool, required by all states. In addition, gates should be self-closing and self-latching.
- Materials: From mesh and wood to vinyl and aluminum, fences can be constructed on your property of a variety of materials. Durability should be your main concern.

- Removable mesh pool fencing: Easy to move, install, configure and store, mesh is durable, versatile and affordable. But your mesh fencing should meet the ASTM International quality and safety standards. For your peace of mind, Guardian pool fencing, installed by Central Jersey Pools, meets these standards.
- Vertical bar fencing: Whichever material you choose for your traditional fencing system, the spaces between the vertical bars should be no more than four inches wide.
- Glass panel fencing: Constructed of tempered glass, these fences are durable and safe, plus they’re transparent and don’t obstruct views or detract from appearance.
Longevity, durability and safety: these are what you should have in mind as you peruse the many types of fencing materials. Here are a few you can choose from:
- Mesh: Mesh fencing can be a refreshing change from permanent, installation-intensive traditional fencing. It also happens to be durable, lightweight and removable in many instances.
- Wood: This type can be painted or stained to match your home, providing a natural complement to any pool area. It’s available in a variety of styles, but can rot or split if you don’t keep up with maintenance.
- Vinyl: With the ability to last up to 30 years, vinyl is a long-lasting option with little upkeep.
- Metal: Low in maintenance, metal is durable and surprisingly affordable. If you go with aluminum, you’ll pay a bit more but it won’t ever rust.
