The monthlong Street Smart NJ campaign urgest both drivers and pedestrians tp pay attention to avoid accdents.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, NJ — With the holidays comes an increase of pedestrians and motorists using the streets, and Freehold Township police are urging all to pay close attention to prevent pedestrian fatalities.

Under the Street Smart NJ campaign, the monthlong effort aims to remind everyone of the steps they can take to make roads safer for all users.

The Street Smart NJ campaign focuses on five core messages, police said.

Drivers are reminded to "Stop for pedestrians" and to "Obey posted speed limits."

Pedestrians are reminded to "Wait for the walk" and "Use the crosswalk."

The fifth message applies to both drivers and pedestrians: "Avoid distractions when driving or walking. Heads up, phones down."

During the campaign, which started Monday, there will be increased police presence and scrutiny at locations where pedestrians and drivers interact, police said.
