Why Applewood Residents are Worry-Free During Snowstorms

Residents agree the best place to watch any snowstorm is from the glass-enclosed heated pool and spa, set at a balmy 82 degrees.

Another snowstorm (or two) is on the way, but our careful preparation and attention to safety and security for our residents, staff and guests never wavers.

Here are 10 weather-related issues residents at our continuing care retirement community (CCRC) don’t have to worry about:

  • Driving in bad weather to pick up essentials
  • Family stressed about your safety and comfort
  • Driveway and walkway shoveling
  • Asking family and neighbors to shovel for you
  • Removing heavy snow off the roof
  • Spreading heavy salt or sand
  • Dealing with the hassle of power and utility outages
  • Waiting in long grocery store lines
  • Worrying about medication refills
  • Feeling isolated and alone

Applewood maintenance staff will continuously remove accumulation from roads and walkways and drop sand to offset icing.

Upon request, staff will shovel in and around residents’ cars parked outside to get them back on the road.

“Should the community lose power, auxiliary generators are ready to kick-in, which will supply ample electricity to the commercial kitchens and the Performing Arts Center,” Ray adds.

Applewood Dining Services Expertly Plans for Weather Challenges

“From a Dining Services perspective, ensuring we have adequate staff to prepare and serve meals is key,” says Heath Braunstein, director of dining services.

“Food prep is done the day prior to the storm to guarantee efficient cooking and service of quality soups, entrees and side dishes the next day.”

Heath adds that his team offers complimentary delivery of lunch and dinner “box meals” to cottage home residents who may not want to trek to the dining rooms for meals.

“In my five years at Applewood, we have weathered many storms and I am proud to say we’ve never had to change our menu during one of these events!”
