Window Cleaning Tips: Indoors and Outdoors

No one likes to wash windows but it’s a task that can’t be ignored. If the grime and dirt are really building up on your windows, it’s time to come up with a plan and get them clean. This will enhance your curb appeal as well as how you’re perceived by neighbors and customers. Plus, you will actually be able to see out of them clearly for a nicer view. It’s important to do the job right, so check out these helpful tips and gather all your necessary supplies.

Inside Window Cleaning

  • Fill a bucket with cool water and some liquid dish soap. Just a little will do. You don’t need to buy expensive cleaning agents at the store.
  • Place a towel underneath the window to catch spills.
  • Start washing from the top and work your way to the bottom using a microfiber cloth.
  • Wipe the frame, inside and out.
  • Combine vinegar and water in a bottle or mix a capful of ammonia with two gallons of water. This will give an extra cleaning boost to your windows.
  • Dry with a lint-free towel in a Z-shaped motion for best results. Don’t use paper towels because they can leave dust and fibers on the glass.
  • Choose a cool, cloudy day to wash your windows so the sun doesn’t cause streaks from drying too fast.

  • Wet down the windows with water from a garden hose.
  • Fill a bucket with cool water and liquid dish soap, just like you did for the interior.
  • Clean windows using a microfiber cloth or a sponge mop on a pole to reach the second story.
  • Rinse off with water from the hose.
  • Apply the vinegar/water mix, just like above.
  • Use a clean, rubber-blade squeegee to remove the spray, working from top to bottom. Use a dry towel on the blade’s bottom after every pass. Don’t have a squeegee? Use a lint-free towel instead.
  • If your windows are coated with bird droppings and other stubborn stains, spray with the vinegar solution, then let sit for a while. Scrub off with a sponge but don’t use steel wool because it can scratch the glass.
  • To clean your screens, rinse with water, then spray with vinegar solution. Rinse again with clean water and air dry before replacing.
  • If you notice mineral deposits from hard water, use a commercial cleaner like CLR to remove the calcium, lime and rust.

Whether you choose to do your outside windows one day and inside the next, or all at once, don’t neglect this important household task.
