Woman Fatally Shot While Driving On Route 33 Identified

Breaking: The Monmouth County prosecutor's office said a person is in custody in the shooting that killed a 24-year-old Sciasia Calhoun.

FREEHOLD, NJ — The woman shot and killed on the Route 33 bypass on Friday morning has been identified as a Freehold resident.

Sciasia Calhoun, 24, of Freehold was the driver who was shot and killed, the Monmouth County prosecutor's office confirmed. She was pronounced dead at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold Township at 12:48 a.m.

"A suspect is in custody and there is no further threat to the public," the Monmouth County prosecutor's office said Friday morning. The spokesperson said further details would be released later in the day.

Calhoun was killed as she was driving onto Halls Mills Road from the bypass at the time, authorities said. Her boyfriend and a 1-year-old child in the car were unharmed, the Monmouth County prosecutor's office said.

The Route 33 bypass was shut down until about 9 a.m. during the investigation.

The shooting happened a few miles from a fatal shooting on Route 18 in Colts Neck over the weekend that killed an Asbury Park barber. But despite media reports, the prosecutor's office has not said whether the incidents are related.
