1st-Grader Unknowingly Took Loaded Gun To School: Galloway PD

GALLOWAY, NJ — A first-grade student unknowingly brought a loaded handgun to school in his backpack Thursday, Galloway police announced Tuesday. An investigation revealed a relative staying with the child's family placed it in the backpack, according to authorities.

The relative — Lamar Keith Williamson, of Atlantic City — was charged with child endangerment and possessing a weapon as a convicted felon, police said. Williamson's whereabouts are unknown at this time, police said. Authorities did not immediately make any identifying information available.

The Atlantic Community Charter School student had a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, police said. The child discovered it at about 3:05 p.m. Thursday and instantly made school staff aware, according to officials.

School administration immediately notified Galloway police. Officials also contacted the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency.

A warrant has been issued for Williamson's arrest.
