At 12:53 a.m., the accident was discovered after troopers responded to the southbound Garden State Parkway at milepost 48.6 in response on a report of a car into the woods, police said.

Detectives determined that Darryl Thomas, 27, of Brooklyn, N.Y. was driving a 2016 Nissan Maxima southbound in the left lane when he lost control of the car, traveled across the road to the right, drove through the guardrail, and overturned multiple times as the car traveled down an embankment and into a marsh.

Darryl Thomas and passenger Zachary Pearce, 22, of Jamaica, N.Y. were ejected in the Port Republic-are crash, police said.

The U.S. Coast Guard and West Tuckerton Dive Team assisted with locating the victims. At the scene, Darryl Thomas was pronounced deceased at 4:39 a.m. and Zachary Pearce was pronounced deceased at 4:43 a.m., police said.

Passengers Lamarr Edwards, 22, and Derrell Shaw, 31, both of Jamaica, N.Y. were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The New Jersey State Police Fatal Accident Unit, Crime Scene Investigations Unit, Troop “D” Criminal Investigation Office, and troopers from Galloway Station are investigating the crash.
