4 Children, 4 Adults Assault Atlantic City Cops During Fight: Police

The group, ranging in age from 12 to 33, were fighting each other and then assaulted officers who tried to intervene, police said.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Eight women ranging in age from 12 to 33 were charged with assault and more after police tried to stop a fight between a group of minors and adults, Atlantic City police said.

Officers responded to the 400 block of north Delaware Avenue at 8:20 p.m. on June 5 in reference to a large group fighting outside, police said.

The group was mostly female and was a mix of children and adults, according to police.

As officers tried to intervene in the fight and make arrests, they were assaulted by members of the group, police said.

In the end, three were arrested, police said. Further investigation identified five more who were involved in assaulting the officers and interfering with the arrests, and all were charged and arrested at various locations and times throughout the week, police said.

“The Atlantic City Police Department will use all resources at our disposal to hold accountable anyone who assaults or attempts to assault our officers during the performance of their duties,” said Chief James Sarkos. “I want to commend all of the officers involved in this investigation and subsequent arrests on a job well done.”

The four adults were taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility:

  • Amanda Bethel, 32, of Mays Landing, NJ.
    • Charges: Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, hindering apprehension (two counts), obstruction of justice, inciting a riot, and disorderly conduct.
  • Queenetta Gilliard, 33, of Atlantic City.
    • Charges: Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer (two counts), resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, inciting a riot, and disorderly conduct.
  • Sadiyah Gilliard, 25, of Atlantic City.
    • Charges: Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, hindering apprehension, obstruction of justice, inciting a riot, and disorderly conduct.
  • Mya Spellman, 24, of Atlantic City.
    • Charges: Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer (two counts), hindering apprehension (two counts), obstruction of justice, inciting a riot, and disorderly conduct.

The four minors were released on a summons pending a future court date.

  • A 14-year-old female from Atlantic City.
    • Charges: Unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, inciting a riot, and disorderly conduct.
  • A 13-year-old female from Atlantic City.
    • Charges: Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, simple assault, and inciting a riot, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice.
  • A 12-year-old female from Atlantic City.
    • Charges: Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, simple assault, inciting a riot, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice.
  • A 12-year-old female from Atlantic City.
    • Charges: Simple assault.
