NJ Man Sexually Assaulted His Stepdaughter: Prosecutor

Rufino Carreon-Peralta sexually abused his stepdaughter when she was under the age of 13, officials said.

EGG HARBOR TWP., NJ — An Egg Harbor Township man pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree aggravated sexual assault and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child in a case involving a victim younger than 13, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

On Aug. 11, Rufino Carreon-Peralta, 50, of Egg Harbor Township, entered the guilty plea. The charges were aggravated sexual assault against a victim less than 13 years of age and endangering the welfare of a child by permitting a child to engage in filming a prohibited sexual act.

The plea calls for a recommended sentence of 18 years in New Jersey State Prison with no parole for the sexual assault charge. He also is facing a sentence of 10 years in New Jersey State Prison for endangering the welfare of a child, subject to the No Early Release Act. The sentences are to run concurrent to each other.

Upon release, Carreon-Peralta will be required to register as a sex offender pursuant to Megan's Law and will be subject to Parole Supervision for Life. He is currently lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The case began May 11, 2023, when members of the Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded to a report from a juvenile. According to authorities, the juvenile reported that their step-father, identified as Carreon-Peralta, had been sexually abusing them.

The victim reported that while she was under the age of 13, Carreon-Peralta had the victim engage in sexual acts with him, according to authorities. The victim also reported that Carreon-Peralta permitted the victim to engage in filming prohibited sexual acts.

Carreon-Peralta is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 10, 2026. That sentencing date is tentative pending an Avenel evaluation.
