Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office Announces New Domestic Violence Unit

The new unit will use a vertical prosecution model and add dedicated victim advocacy resources.

MAYS LANDING, NJ — The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office announced the formal establishment of a dedicated Domestic Violence Unit, effective Oct. 5, 2026.

The office said the unit is intended to protect victims, promote public safety and hold offenders accountable through what it described as a coordinated, trauma-informed and victim-centered approach to domestic violence investigations and prosecutions.

The announcement coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, observed each October in New Jersey and nationwide. This year's theme, "Every1KnowsSome1," is meant to highlight that domestic violence affects every community and that people can play a role in recognizing abuse, supporting survivors and helping prevent violence, according to the announcement.

The prosecutor's office said the new unit will provide specialized prosecutorial, investigative, supervisory and victim advocacy resources dedicated exclusively to domestic violence matters. Cases will be handled through a vertical prosecution model, meaning assigned prosecutors will remain responsible for a case from charging through final disposition. According to the office, that structure is designed to improve consistency, case preparation, informed decision-making and support for victims navigating the court system.

"Domestic violence cases require a coordinated response that recognizes both the complexities of these offenses and the profound impact they have on victims and families," said William E. Reynolds, Atlantic County Prosecutor. "The establishment of the Domestic Violence Unit demonstrates our commitment to delivering specialized, trauma-informed services while ensuring offenders are held accountable and victims receive the support and advocacy they deserve."

"Too often, domestic violence occurs behind closed doors and leaves victims feeling isolated and without options. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we want every victim to know that help is available, that they will be heard, and that our Office is committed to pursuing justice while working alongside our law enforcement and community partners to provide meaningful support and protection," Reynolds said.

The office said the unit will include designated assistant prosecutors, investigative personnel, victim-witness advocates and supervisory staff. Those staff members are expected to work with municipal police departments, victim service agencies, advocacy organizations, healthcare professionals and community stakeholders.

The announcement also included resource information for people experiencing domestic violence or concerned about someone else's safety. The New Jersey Statewide Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached 24 hours a day at 1-800-572-SAFE (7233). The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) and at www.thehotline.org. In an emergency, people should call 911 or contact local law enforcement immediately.
