Drunk Man Left Scene Of Accident, Stole Another Car In Galloway: Police

Willis Austin is accused of stealing a car after running a red light and causing an accident Saturday morning.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ — A Galloway Township man who police say was intoxicated faces charges of motor vehicle theft and assault by auto following a series of incidents that took place Saturday morning.

It all began when 34-year-old Willis Austin ran a red light and hit another car at about 7:19 a.m. at the intersection of West White Horse Pike and Pomona Road, the Galloway Township Police Department announced on Saturday.

The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division with injuries to her arm and head. Before being taken to the hospital, she told police she was driving east on West White Horse Pike when she was hit by someone who had run the light, police said.

Police said further investigation determined that Austin was driving north on Pomona Road when he ran the red light located at West White Horse Pike and caused the accident. He then fled the scene of the accident on foot towards the direction of Pomona Plaza, according to police.

It was around this time that the Galloway Township Police Department concerning a 2010 black Chevrolet Camaro that had just been stolen from outside the Pomona Laundromat and was now headed east on West White Horse Pike.

Soon thereafter, police found Austin near the intersection of East White Horse Pike and 3rd Avenue, where he was taken into custody. The stolen Chevrolet Camaro was found behind W.L. Goodfellows Restaurant, police said.

Austin was charged with motor vehicle theft, assault by automobile, leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury and driving while intoxicated. He was released on multiple summonses pending a future court date.
