Egg Harbor City Man Indicted in Absecon Man's Death

Police say Zachariah Mays punched Kyle Athill in the head, ultimately resulting in his death.

An Egg Harbor City man has been indicted for manslaughter in connection with the death of an Absecon man in February, Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced Monday night.

Zachariah Mays, 24, was previously charged with aggravated assault for allegedly punching 30-year-old Kyle Athill and causing him head trauma. The incident took place on Feb. 15, when police found Athill lying unconscious on the ground on the 800 block of North Main Street. Athill was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division with a life-threatening head injury.

Mays was charged on Feb. 17. Athill died on Feb. 18. The cause of death was massive head trauma, and the death was ruled a homicide. Mays was subsequently charged with reckless manslaughter.

Mays remains lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $250,000 bail.
