Egg Harbor Coach Named State's 'Heartland Hero'

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — A local youth sports coach and community organizer has been named New Jersey's "Heartland Hero" for the month.

New Jersey's Heartland, a group that promotes Atlantic, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties named Egg Harbor Township's Paul Sparano as the Heartland Hero for September and October.

Sparano is a "staunch supporter" of his community in Atlantic County, according to a news release.

An avid fan of Philadelphia sports, Sparano has served as a youth coach for more than 20 years.

"Whether it's on the baseball diamond, the mat, or the outdoor court, Sparano is a committed to supporting young athletes and lifting the team spirit of his entire community," the news release says.

He started out as a wrestling coach, according to the release.

Since 1998, he has coached baseball for the Sand Sharks, an Egg Harbor Township recreational team. Sparano has also coached street hockey for 13 years and is part of a committee that organizes movie nights for the community.

During this festive time of year, Sparano volunteers his house for his neighborhood's Halloween float ride and helps to build the float as well. He also serves as the emcee for the fun community event.

"While New Jersey's Heartland is filled with hidden gems, its biggest treasures are the people who make the region a great place to live, work, play, and raise a family," New Jersey's Heartland said.
