Homeowner In Galloway Cockfighting Case To Stay Jailed

Jose Madera, of Egg Harbor City, will stay detained pending trial on numerous animal cruelty charges and more in the cockfighting ring case.

GALLOWAY, NJ — An Egg Harbor City man will stay jailed until trial in connection with the recent massive cockfighting ring bust in Galloway, authorities said.

Jose Madera, 33, is the owner of the home housing the cockfighting ring that was uncovered by police on March 9, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Madera faces numerous animal cruelty offenses, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, destruction of evidence and resisting arrest.

At the S. Bremen Avenue home, officers found an "elaborate cockfighting operation," police said, including a constructed cockfighting ring, spectator style seating and numerous cockfighting "kits." About 50 roosters in varying degrees of health were found in crates, storage boxes and bags in and around the arena, police said. When police arrived, many people tried to run away, officials said. Madera, the homeowner, was arrested on the scene.
