Kick Off 2023 With First Day Hikes At Wharton State Forest

Spend New Year's Day exploring Batsto Village and the surrounding Pine Barrens with these free, educational walks.

HAMMONTON, NJ — Looking to start 2023 off with exercise and education? Wharton State Forest is offering a couple of different First Day Hikes so you can kick off the new year in a healthy way.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is hosting a number of "First Day Hikes" throughout New Jersey's state parks, and for South Jerseyans whose New Year's resolution is to get outside more, there are plenty in the area.

Want to take a step into the past and explore South Jersey's history? This easy one-mile hike takes you through historic Batsto Village, "with planned stops at the mansion, general store, sawmill, and more," according to the DEP.

Maybe you want something a little more challenging, but also inspirational. The resilient Pine Barrens guided walk takes you through two miles of the Pinelands National Reserve, where you can learn all about the resilient species that call it home.

"Topics include American eels, beavers, and carnivorous plants!" the DEP said.

The walk kicks off at 11 a.m. Children over 10 with an adult are welcome, as are service animals.

Another walk will cover the history of fire in the Pinelands, from its industrial use to its destructive power.

All ages are welcome to this moderate, two-mile hike, and you can bring your friendly, leashed dogs.

It's offered at three times: 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

All three of these events require registration, so call the Batsto Village Center at 609-561-0024 to register. Email ally.horan@dep.nj.gov for more information.

In the event of bad weather, the hikes will be canceled. Check out the Wharton State Forest Facebook page for the most up-to-date information, and visit the DEP for more information on First Day Hikes.
