Best known for their mega hits “Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me),” “Early in the Morning,” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” “Outstanding” and “Party Train,” the Gap Band toiled in obscurity for several years prior to becoming one of the most popular funk groups of the late 1970s and 1980s. The Tulsa, Oklahoma natives produced 15 Top Ten R&B singles ranging from ferocious funk anthems to quiet storm ballads such as “Yearning for Your Love” and “Are You Living.” Many hits featured instantly-memorable, rippling synthesizer basslines and all featured deep, invigorating lead vocals that are still heavily sampled by hip-hop artists today.
