Lockdown At Absegami High School Was Result Of Fake Gun: Police

A student was in possession of what turned out to be a fake gun Wednesday morning.

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ — Absegami High School and the adjacent Galloway Township schools were put on lockdown for what turned out to be a fake gun, Galloway police said early Wednesday afternoon.

The incident began when a 16-year-old boy showed another student what appeared to be a gun just after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, police said. Staff immediately placed the school into a shelter in place and contacted the Galloway Township Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers quickly apprehend the student, identified in a press release as “J.E.,” without incident. Police then found the weapon in question, which turned out to be an imitation firearm, in his backpack.

No injuries were reported, and the shelter in place was lifted accordingly for school to resume. Area elementary schools adjacent to the high school property were also placed on a shelter in place as a safeguard until the incident at Absegami was deemed safe.

The student was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon (imitation firearm) (D.P) and fourth-degree possession of a weapon (imitation firearm) for an unlawful purpose, both inside an educational institution. He was also charged with disorderly conduct (D.P) and harassment /causing alarm (D.P).

He was processed and released pending a court appearance. Galloway Township police thank the staff and students for their cooperation during this incident.
