Man Admits To Stabbing Mother To Death In South Jersey: Prosecutor

MAYS LANDING, NJ — A South Jersey man who previously served jail time for attempting to kill his mother has now pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection with her stabbing death, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Sean Daly, 53, of Mays Landing, is expected to be sentenced to 30 years in New Jersey State Prison without the possibility of parole.

Shortly before noon on March 20, 2024, police responded to a home on the 6300 block of Quinn Avenue for the report of an assault between Sean Daly and his mother, 74-year-old Melba Daly, also of Mays Landing, authorities said.

Upon arrival, police found Melba Daly, dead, with "multiple stab wounds," authorities said.

Sean Daly then confessed to killing his mother during an interview with members of the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office's Major Crimes Unit and the Hamilton Township Police Department, officials said.

In 2015, Sean Daly was indicted after trying to stab his mother to death in her sleep, the Press of Atlantic City reported at the time. Online court records show that he pleaded guilty to attempted murder and aggravated assault and did jail time.

He is set to be sentenced on Oct. 11, 2024.
