Man Charged With DWI After Fleeing Accident Scene In Hamilton Township: Police

One car rolled over four times in the Sunday night accident.

A man was charged with driving while intoxicated and other offenses after police say he fled the scene of an accident in which a 2008 Toyota Corolla flipped over four times, Hamilton Township police said Monday morning.

The accident happened at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday night when 55-year-old Steven Stewart, of Mountainview, AR, rear-ended a 2010 Acura while they were both driving south on Cologne Avenue, police said. The force of the impact caused the Acura into a spin, finally stopping at Lombard Avenue. The Toyota Stewart was driving rolled over four times.

The driver and passenger in the Acura suffered minor injuries and were evaluated on the scene. A passenger in the Toyota also suffered minor injuries, and was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Division.

Stewart was not injured and ran off into the woods, police said. Responding Hamilton Township police officers and a K-9 tracked Stewart into the woods, where they found him hiding in a bush. He surrendered.

Stewart was charged with DWI, refusal to submit to breath testing, hindering apprehension and contempt of court. He was lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on an unrelated warrant.
